I resonate with this essay even more than many of your other ones because your lessons have so closely resembled mine. My wandering period lasted about five years and like you I discovered kinship in those who were outwardly so different. These were priceless experiences as you mention and made life so much richer than I could have ever imagined before.

On the other hand, travel also helped me deal with my wounds because my difference as a white American was almost always viewed positively in the 1970s. I had an easier situation than you in that regard while lacking your spiritual maturity. I am so happy you have made your discoveries and move through this wide world with less and less fear, more and more joy.
