Nice introduction! Covered a lot of ground in a fair and balanced way.

On a personal note, when I was 18 in the early 1960s I read De Beauvoir's The Mandarins and loved it. She evoked the intellectual excitement of the postwar era while giving insight into the personal qualities of the leading figures such as Camus and Sartre. One of the very best novels of ideas.
